安 / Girl Under takes its starting point from 安, a character in Kay’s Chinese name, and becomes an immersive journey through girlhood, displacement, and memory. This multidisciplinary installation and performance explores migration, political upheaval, and intergenerational memory through interwoven stories from Kay’s matriarchal lineage.

Spanning 1935 to 1975, the work moves between Canton (Guangzhou), Hong Kong, and Vancouver, revealing how displacement shapes identity, memory, and fractured communities, while tracing paths of resilience, belonging, and healing.
